Cigar Box - What is a Cigar Box and How Important is it?

If you like to smoke a good cigar then you should also know what it takes to safely store that expensive cigar in prime smoking condition no matter how long you store it. Traditionally a high quality cigar is sold in the same air tight container or cigar box that it was packed in when it was made.

This is done in an effort to keep it moist and fresh for as long as possible while it travels to its final destination.
The original cigar boxes were simple wooden affairs that had the name of the company that made the cigar on the outside along with a variety of artworks to bring them to the buyer’s attention. Many of these original cigar boxes are now considered collector’s items with values in the hundreds of pounds.

Today the definition of a cigar box is somewhat different; in fact the modern cigar boxes are more like miniature humidors. The whole idea of using cigar boxes to store your cigars in is to keep them fresh just like you do in a humidor; the only difference is the size of the box. They have been encrusted with exotic gems and treated to artwork from world famous artists. A full box of cigars has long been considered the perfect gift between men of distinction and members of the ruling classes.

Made to work just like a full size humidor, inside the box you will find plenty of room for your favorite cigars along with a humidifier to keep them stored at the perfect humidity level of 70 to 72%.

You will also find a hygrometer that is used to monitor the humidity level of the box at all times. One of the nice things about a box with a glass top is that you do not have to open the box to check the humidity level as you can see the hygrometer through the glass top.

Most cigar boxes are built the same way a full size cigar humidor in that they feature a Spanish cedar lining that will hold the moisture in to keep your cigars fresh for months if not years as they age. The outside of the box is usually constructed of a hard wood such as cherry or mahogany.

Some of the boxes will have a removable divider so that you can store more than one variety of cigars without the fear of the two cigars flavouring each other. Having a good cigar box to store your favourite cigars in is essential to keeping them fresh and ready to smoke at any time.
