Cigar Humidifier - Going Beyond the Humidor
Keeping your favourite cigars in a cigar humidor is the only way to ensure that they will
stay fresh and age properly to give you the perfect smoke every time you take one out and light it.
However without a good cigar humidifier
a humidor is nothing more than a wooden box to put things in and should not be used to store cigars as they will
dry out and be ruined. Using a humidifier is vital to maintaining the health of your cigars as you store them.
In order to maintain your cigars at their best, the humidity level inside or your humidor should always be kept
at between 70 and 72%, this is considered the optimum level that will allow your cigars taste to evolve properly
and will let your cigar burn more evenly.
As your cigar dries out it will become fragile and will burn faster, it will also cause your cigars to become
bitter tasting. By using a good cigar humidifier you can avoid this and continue to enjoy your cigars as they age
in optimum conditions.
On the other side of the coin if you allow the humidity level in your humidor to rise too high, above 80% for
any length of time, your cigars will become damp and begin to taste very acidic. If left in these conditions for
too long they will start to rot and mold, this can lead to not only ruining your cigars but can also ruin your
humidor as the rot and mold can seep into the cedar lining.
Perfect Humidity Level
Over the years many different materials have been used as a cigar humidifier to create the perfect
level of humidity but the most common one is the polymer sponge enclosed in a plastic or metal case. It did
not matter whether you spent a huge amount of money or a modest sum they all used the same system for
maintaining humidity. To use these you simply added water to keep them wet and as the water evaporated the
inside of the humidor achieved the appropriate level of humidity.
Modern technology has updated the material used in the cigar humidifier and you can now use a polymer acryl that
is capable of absorbing much larger amounts of water and releasing it in a much more controlled manner. Because of
the polymers ability to maintain a more stable humidity level they can actually stabilize the humidity level in
your humidor in as little as two days and overall require far less maintenance and refilling. There are only two
liquids recommended for refilling your cigar humidifier depending on which type you plan to use. If you are using a
sponge you can use distilled water or a solution of 50% propylene glycol, this solution has been proven to actually
control or eliminate the bacteria that may exist within your humidor. If you are using the newer polymer acryl then
the only thing you can use is distilled water because the use of the propylene glycol solution will actually reduce
the effectiveness of the material for keeping your cigars at the perfect level of humidity.
Remember maintaining the proper level of humidity in your humidor is an essential part of taking care of your
cigars and will result in the perfect smoke every time you take one out and light it. Use a good cigar humidifier
and remember to keep it properly filled at all times for the best results.
