Cigar Humidors - Choosing and Maintaining Cigar Humidors
Now that you have started enjoying the pleasures of a good cigar the next
thing on your list is to take a look at all of the different types of cigar humidors available and choose
which one you will buy to take care of your favourite cigars.
From beginners to the true cigar aficionado the humidor is a very important part of taking good care of your
cigars and making sure that they are always fresh and ready for your enjoyment.
Because a good cigar acts in much the same way as a sponge by absorbing everything in their environment the
flavour can be dramatically affected if they are not stored carefully. If they are not kept in well regulated
cigars humidors the flavour can be
adversely affected and result in a cigar that cannot be smoked and ends up being thrown away.
Conversely if you store your cigars in the perfect environment inside a good humidor they will age well and
become the perfect smoke for even the most dedicated of connoisseurs.
To be effective cigar humidors must be able to maintain the proper
humidity level for your cigars at all times. Most humidors are made from a solid wood case that is lined with a
softer wood such as cedar. The reason that cedar is used is that it is a porous wood that is capable of holding
a good deal of moisture. Spanish cedar is one of the most popular choices because its oily texture and mild
aroma blends with the natural flavour of your favourite cigars to create the ideal smoke. Now that you have
decided on which of the many cigar humidors you are going to buy to store your collection, there are a few
things you need to know about setting it up and taking care of it on a regular basis. The first thing you need
to know is that you cannot put your cigars in your
new humidor right away, it has to be set up and seasoned before you can use it.
Start out by taking a damp cloth and gently wipe down every surface on the inside of your humidor. Since cigar
humidors are designed to create humidity, starting out by moistening all of the wood on the inside is very
necessary. Place a small bowl filled with distilled water on the inside of your humidor and close the lid. Check
the bowl in 12 hours and refill if necessary then leave the lid closed for another 24 hours. Once the level of
water in the bowl stops dropping, the humidor is ready for you to store your cigars inside.
A good Cigar needs a Humidor
All good cigar humidors come with some form of humidifier; some use a tube that you can fill with distilled
water while others use a plastic sponge that you soak in distilled water. These should be carefully filled or
soaked so that the humidity level can be maintained. The only routine maintenance you will need to do is check the
hygrometer occasionally to make sure that the proper level of humidity is being maintained and fill your humidifier
with a mixture of distilled water and propylene glycol when it is dry or empty.
