Humidor - The Reasons You Need a Good Humidor

If you are a cigar smoker, chances are that somewhere buried in
the dark recesses of your house you have an old cigar humidor sitting in a corner of the
closet collecting dust.
It’s probably sitting there waiting for you to find it, toss it away and replace it with a new
one.
The only problem is that if you did not use the old one, you are most likely not going to use
the new one for very long before it suffers the same fate.
Humidors serve a very important purpose when it comes to taking care of those expensive cigars that
you like to smoke and without one your cigars are probably not at their best when you light one
up.
Your favourite cigars are made with tobaccos that come from a variety of countries around the
world, but one thing they all have in common is that the best cigars come from countries like Honduras,
Indonesia, Nicaragua and best of all Cuba.
These countries are all located in tropical climates near the equator where the weather is hot,
sunny and humid for the whole growing season. This is the perfect climate for making excellent
cigars.
Once the cigars are made and shipped away from their home country the conditions they experience
may change several times before they reach you.
These changes in temperature and humidity levels can cause the overall quality of your favourite
cigars to begin to degrade from the point where they leave the manufacturer all the way to the
point where you light them.

A cigar then begins to lose its flavor and may actually become something you
cannot smoke if not treated properly.
In order to properly restore the right humidity level to your cigars they should be stored in a good quality
humidor. Properly made cigar humidors are usually crafted using a hardwood exterior cabinet or box, they can be
small enough to sit on your desk and only hold a few cigars or they can be a cabinet sized humidor that holds
hundreds of cigars at a time depending on your needs.
The Inside of your humidor should be
lined with a fragrant wood such as cedar that will absorb the moisture from the humidifier and help maintain the
proper humidity level for your cigars for long periods of time. You should also have a device that allows you to
use either distilled water or a special humidifying compound to maintain the humidity level at 70 to 72% at all
times. This is the ideal humidity level to store all cigars in and will keep them fresh for long periods of
time.
Your cigar humidor should also have a hygrometer inside; this device is used to
measure the humidity level to help ensure that your cigars are being stored at the appropriate level of humidity.
So before you throw out that old humidor take a good look at it. If it is damaged or the wood is cracked it might
be time to buy a new one and start using it to take better care of your favourite cigars and enjoy a much fresher
tasting smoke.
