Tobacco Humidor - What is the Difference Between a Tobacco Humidor and Humidors
for Cigars?
There is nothing quite like the taste and aroma of a fine tobacco, whether you are smoking a fine cigar or
indulging yourself in a pipe full of a delightfully aromatic blend of tobacco.
In order to be able to continue to enjoy the cigar or pipe tobacco to its fullest you need to be able to store
them in the proper environment and at the proper level of humidity. This can only happen if you use a tobacco
humidor to keep them at the right level of humidity at all times.
If your tobacco humidor lets your favourite tobacco or cigar dry out they will burn too fast and have almost no
taste.
On the other hand if the humidor you choose allows the humidity levels to rise too high there is a good chance
that you will end up with mold infesting your favourite tobacco rendering it fit only for the rubbish bin.
If either of these situations occurs the only real loser is you as you will have to throw away your expensive
cigars or pipe tobacco.
The design of the tobacco humidor varies as much as the number of different types of cigars and tobaccos, but the
most important thing you need to have is an air tight box that is capable of keeping your tobacco at the right
level of humidity. This will keep it fresh and age it well so that your next smoke is always as good as or better
than the last.
While the tobacco humidor and the cigar humidor are
somewhat similar in use they can be very different in construction. This is because they both have different
humidity requirements for properly storing the products they are made for. While each of the products requires a
certain amount of humidity to age and store them properly they do not have to be stored in the same way to achieve
this.
Humidors Shapes and Sizes
Pipe tobacco humidors can be found in numerous different
shapes, sizes and materials , many of the most popular and collected one were created in Europe and can be quite
whimsical in nature. They can be made from pottery, metal or wood and generally have no special lining such the
ones made for cigars do. This is because the tobacco that is cut for use in a pipe is much coarser in cut and
tends to hold its moisture much better, to store it really only requires an air tight container although some
people still place a humidifier in with their favourite pipe tobacco.
On the other hand cigars need a much more carefully controlled environment to store them in than a standard tobacco
humidor can provide. A good cigar humidor consists of a solid wooden case that has been lined with a special wood
such as Spanish cedar. The cedar is a very porous wood that will hold in moisture and when used in conjunction with
a humidifier will keep your cigars fresh while allowing them to age gracefully until you are ready to enjoy
them.
