Travel Humidors - The Evolution and Use of Travel Humidors
The very first cigar humidors were created by Zino Davidoff in the early 20th century as a way to store his
cigars in a container that would keep them fresh even if they were to be kept there for long periods of time. The
only problem with these humidors was that they were exceptionally large cellar humidors and travel with them was
quite impossible.
These humidors were ideal for ensuring that you would always have the perfect cigar at home to smoke, but
created a dilemma when it came time to travel and you wanted to take your cigars with you.
This problem spawned the birth of travel humidors and the early models were more or less
airtight containers into which you placed the cigars as soon as you took them out of your cellar humidor. This
would have been a great idea except it came with anf inherent problem. As soon as you opened the container the
humidity inside was released.
Each time you opened the container more of the humidity from the carefully stored cigars was let out. In the end
if you were on a long journey your cigars would dry out or if you were traveling in a very humid country, the
ambient humidity would end up making your cigars very soggy.

Today travel humidors come in a wide variety of shapes, styles and sizes from those that will carry from one to as
many as 25 cigars depending on which one you choose. Materials used for travel humidors vary from cheap plastic to
humidors that are made from the finest hardwoods and are fully cedar lined. These hardwood humidors are just like
the full sized humidor that you keep your collection at home in to help keep your cigars stored at the appropriate
humidity level.
When you are traveling with you cigars you need to prepare for your trip by making sure that you have properly
prepared your travel humidor for the trip. Unless you are one who is constantly travelling chances are
your humidor sits in a closet collecting dust and waiting for the next time you need it. If this is the case then
you will want to spend a little time properly preparing your humidor before you even think about storing your
valuable cigars in it.

Since the best travel humidors are smaller versions of you home size humidor, you will need to properly moisten
the inside with a damp cloth to allow the cedar lining to soak up as much moisture as it can hold. You should then
fill up the humidifier and close the lid for 12 hours. After 12 hours open the lid and refill the humidifier, close
the lid and let sit for 24 hours before placing your cigars inside.
If you are going to be on a long trip you should take some hydrating solution along with you to make sure the
humidifier stays topped off and keeps the humidity level in your humidifier at the optimum level for the entire
trip.
